Makam Workshop with Recep Gül (Türkiye)

Makam Workshop

Wednesday, May 27, 2026, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., mobilé, Schützenstr. 30, 87616 Marktoberdorf

A hands-on, participatory workshop on classical Turkish music. We’ll start with simple listening and vocal exercises to help all participants feel comfortable using their own voices. No prior knowledge of makam music or music theory is required.

Participants then explore sound together through group improvisations. I guide the process with clear and simple rules: some sounds are sustained, others move, and participants learn to listen to and respond to one another. In addition, I introduce simple rhythmic patterns from Turkish music that are repeated and looped. These rhythms are performed with hands and body as percussion and form a shared rhythmic foundation. A digital visualization tool called MakamNetz is used as a visual and auditory guide, not as a theoretical teaching aid. The application provides numerous short audio examples that serve as listening references during the exercises. The color-coded display makes it easier for participants, especially those without formal musical training, to find their bearings.

The workshop alternates between brief explanations, listening, and active music-making, so that learning takes place primarily through hands-on experience.

Music-making is at the heart of the workshop.
The most important instrument is the voice. Participants who play a traditional Turkish instrument and would like to bring it are warmly invited to do so; however, this is optional and not a requirement. All necessary sound samples are also available via the app.

However, participants should have basic musical experience. In particular, they are expected to be able to hear a short melodic phrase and reproduce it vocally. The workshop is based on listening, imitation, and group interaction.
