Musica Sacra International, 22–26 May 2026 in Marktoberdorf, Augsburg, Munich and the Allgäu region
The Musica Sacra International festival presents a diverse range of music from different religions and other cultural traditions over the Whitsun period from 22 to 26 May 2026 in Marktoberdorf, Augsburg, Munich and throughout the Allgäu region. Through music, this festival of encounters aims to make a contribution – particularly important in today’s world – to getting to know and understanding other cultures and religions. Audiences will experience extraordinary musical performances, diversity, community and tolerance. The theme of the upcoming festival is "Resonances of the Sacred".
Eight ensembles and choirs from various countries and regions of the world have been invited: Le Chant sur la Lowé from Gabon (Christianity), the Naghash Ensemble from Armenia (Armenian Apostolic), Polifonija from Lithuania (Christianity), Kol koré from Germany and Israel (Judaism), the Brigham Young University Singers from the USA (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), the Cologne Gagaku Ensemble from Germany and Japan (Buddhism), the Efsun Ensemble from Türkiye and Germany (Islam) and the Prassanna Vishwanathan Ensemble from India (Hinduism). In addition to attending a wide variety of concerts, from 22 to 26 May 2026 you can get to know the ensembles in various workshops, sing along in the festival choir, attend lectures, worship services and an interfaith prayer, and gather in the evenings at the "Café Musica".
Anyone wishing to experience the festival first-hand as a singer is welcome to join the festival choir. For the fourth time, all singing enthusiasts are invited to actively participate in and help shape the festival: sharing the joy of singing with others whilst discovering new things, combining leisure with professional development, listening to and performing sacred music from various religions – all this awaits you. The festival choir is conducted by Prof. Jan Schumacher (Germany), whilst the American choir "Brigham Young University Singers" from Provo, Utah, serves as the studio choir. Especially for the festival, the Polish composer Zuzanna Koziej has been commissioned to set a "Gayatri Mantra" to music. In addition, compositions by Gerald Cohen, Goudimel, Ali Ufki and Recep Gül will be rehearsed. The programme of the festival choir will be premiered at the grand closing concert of Musica Sacra International together with the other choirs and ensembles.
