Hobn mir a Niggundl? Shall we dare to sing a little song? - Music in Judaism

Concert to kick off "Musica Sacra International" on 14.11.2023, 7:00 p.m.
Arthur-Groß-Saal, Marktoberdorf Grammar School
Free admission. Donations requested.

"Hobn mir a Niggundl? Shall we dare a little song? - Music in Judaism" is the title of the concert on Tuesday, 14 November, in the Arthur-Groß-Saal of the Marktoberdorf Grammar School.
The concert is the prelude to the "Musica Sacra International" festival, which in 2024 will have the motto "Time of Fear. Time of trust". The Israeli cantor Yoëd Sorek and the pianist and musicologist Jascha Nemtsov will present chant and piano music of Judaism. Also participating in the concert will be the vocal ensemble of the middle school (conducted by Susanne Holm) and the chamber orchestra of the Marktoberdorf grammar school (conducted by Stephan Dollansky), who rehearsed Jewish songs during the day as part of a workshop with Yoëd Sorek.

The concert and workshop are part of the educational series "Toleranz macht Schule". The aim of this series is to use artistic methods to impart knowledge about the world's religions in order to promote understanding and tolerance between the different faiths. The current situation of war in Israel and Gaza makes it clear how important this educational work is to ensure that anti-Semitism and violence have no place in Germany. Religious diversity, mutual understanding and peace between cultures have been the goals of the "Musica Sacra International" music festival from the very beginning.

Prof. Dr. Jascha Nemtsov is a pianist and musicologist, Professor of the History of Jewish Music at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Weimar, Academic Director of Cantorial Training at the Abraham Geiger College and Associate Member of the Max Weber College for Cultural and Social Studies at the University of Erfurt.

Yoëd Sorek began his vocal studies at the Jerusalem Academy. As a tenor, he sang with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra and the MDR Orchestra, among others. He also specialised in Jewish and Yiddish music and is a cantor student at the Abraham Geiger Kolleg Potsdam. Since 2021 he has been cantor of the Liberal Jewish Community of Hanover.

In the vocal ensembles and the chamber orchestra of the Gymnasium Marktoberdorf, particularly interested and committed pupils can tackle more demanding works and thus develop themselves even further. Pupils from the 7th to 9th grade participate in the vocal ensemble of the intermediate school. The ensemble preferably performs baroque works, modern arrangements of traditional pieces, new choral literature or popular music.

Concert organiser is MODfestivals e.V. / Musica Sacra International in cooperation with the Marktoberdorf grammar school.
